14th Century Head of the Holy Virgin in Limestone, France

Very beautiful head of the Holy Virgin wearing a veil, fragment of a statue in foot, in limestone. The pedestal bears an indication "Toulousaine school, 15th century", but we are more likely in the presence of a work of the 14th century, or even before. Indeed, one would have the temptation to bring this head closer to that of the chapel of Rieux, the museum of the Augustinians in Toulouse (inv.RA772bis) by the stretched eyes, the thin mouth with the smile barring that sweet and juvenile face, The waving of the hair is here closer to the Roman style. A trace of a circle in the veil above the head suggests that there might be a crown. Traces of polychromy in the right hair. Height: 19 cm without the base. Rare and very beautiful work.
